Local Transportation in India: How to Get Around

Internal Flights Given India's size, it is perhaps not surprising that the country's domestic flight network is expanding and gaining popularity. We're not fans of flying and honestly believe that any other mode of transportation is more interesting and carbon-friendly, but we also acknowledge that there are times when flying is necessary.

Jet Airways was our preferred domestic carrier, but alas, the company went bankrupt. Indigo is no-frills but generally efficient, whereas Vistara (owned by Taj) provides excellent service. These are two of our favourite airlines; however, we try to avoid Air India, whose flights are frequently delayed...

It is possible to reach the majority of destinations by train as opposed to flying if you have enough time. There are popular routes that many travellers choose to fly on, such as Mumbai to Goa, despite the fact that the train ride takes only eight hours and passes through beautiful, verdant scenery.

Remember to bring the debit/credit card used to make the flight reservation with you to check in, as airlines will request it. Also check: Best place to stay in coorg

Trains. Indian Railways is an integral part of India's infrastructure (and the third largest employer in the world), and to visit India without taking a train is to completely miss the country. If you're in a hurry and want to book your tickets from abroad, we recommend using a travel agent.

Read this article to learn everything you need to know about train travel in India. Some of our favourite journeys to date have included: Mumbai to Pune (take the early morning train to see the sun rise over the mountains); Delhi to Kolkata and the Rajdhani (express trains); Kochin to Goa; and Ajmer to Udaipur in Rajasthan.

Buses. Buses, as well as pick-ups and minivans, are a vital part of the local transportation infrastructure and the best way to get to and from smaller towns without rail access. These are a combination of state-run and private buses. You can search for that state's "State Road Transport" or buses based on your location: The KSRTC, also known as the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, will provide you with bus schedules and information.

There are also numerous overnight sleeper buses on long-distance routes; these are typically all air-conditioned, and many travellers prefer Volvo buses, which are regarded as more luxurious and safer. We prefer trains for overnight travel because they are more comfortable, but buses are easier to book and can be a good alternative if trains are sold out.
